Avery by Driessen & Muller

'Perfume is volatile, like a bird,’ says Avery’s creator, Dutch designer Lilian Driessen. ‘The distinct and almost human personalities of birds offer excellent inspiration for a perfume shop.’ You can compare her design to the three notes of perfume. Top note: an initial presentation of the shop and its wares. Middle note: the heart of the shop, where a table with shapely bird’s feet invites the visitor to sample the fragrances. Base note: a relaxing area with an amusing and quaint mix of practical and decorative elements. ‘I like the stories that old pieces carry within them, and I love what’s going on in virtual media,’ explains Driessen.

Together with designer Andreas Muller, she also created an interactive perfume installation for Avery. When approached, giant perfume bottles emit a spray, robotic flowers bloom and birdsong fills the air. Avery mixes the traditional fairy-tale décor with an ingenious touch of technology.
